I FEEL SO DASTARDLY AND LAME (YET KINDA COOL)!!

October 26, 2007

So I came upon the site John Chow Dot Com. Seems he has a pretty big blog and talks about making money from it. Yeah, I know, I’m pretty late for the show. Well if you become an email subscriber of his he’ll send you his e-book Making Money Online in which he details what to do to optimize you blog to get readers and make money. I’ve already used some of his advice as I changed my flavicon (that little picture next to your URL or tab) from the Blogspot B to my own Free From Broke F.

That is great but here comes the sleazy part: one of his tips is to not show your feeder count if it’s small. So I listened and took it off. His logic made sense. If the number is small people may not respect your site but if it’s larger it tends to add more authority. It doesn’t sound fair but it’s probably true. He also mentions that there’s a way to use someone else’s chicklet stats to make it look like you have a lot more feed readers. He points to Net Business Blog for instructions on how to do this. Soooo…I went and changed to the code on my chiklet. I feel so cheap! But I now have almost 2000 feed readers displayed!!

I’m not going to keep it this way but I think it would be a nice experiment to see if my numbers change. So here’s the challenge: Even though I’ve just disclosed why my feed reader chiklet is so high will my subscriber number go up anyway?

Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

P.S. I don’t want you to think John Chow’s e-book is full of sleazy advice. It’s not! I haven’t gotten through it all but what I’ve read so far makes a lot of sense and I highly suggest it!
