MY NEWBIE BLOGGING MISTAKES

October 25, 2007

I received an article from MarcoRichter.net today and Mr. Richter is asking bloggers to submit blogging mistakes they have made. This got me thinking. Though I’ve only been doing this now two weeks there have been a bunch mistakes I’ve made. Here it goes:

  • Not realizing how difficult it is to write good articles consistently. I have a ton of ideas but making them comprehensible articles that people would read is a whole other matter.
  • Constantly checking statistics and analytics for the site. Really, not much is going to happen every ten minutes. I’ve been trying to ween myself off of this habit.
  • Not understanding HTML/CSS. This isn’t huge as this is on Blogspot but still if I had a better understand of the languages I’d be a little less in the dark. I plan to pick up a book or two and get my head around them.
  • I didn’t get my domain name until a week after I started. It’s feels so much better to not have that .blogspot in my URL! I feel like I now have ownership and this is really mine! Granted, I wasn’t sure how serious I would be when I started.
  • Getting intimidated by the content of other sites. I started out gangbusters then saw what other sites look like and I was a little taken aback. I’m getting past this but occasionally I ask myself if I have a place in this blog universe.
  • Not getting onto Wordpress and self hosting. Again, wasn’t sure how into this I’d be but I can see now the advantages to using a more adaptable system like Wordpress over Blogger. Once I have a better idea of how to set everything up I’ll make my move.
  • Keywords, SEO, spiders, page rank…Whazzat?!? No really, I need some help with these!
  • Thinking it would be easy to make money with this. I’m not saying a lot but a few bucks? Anyone? Bueller?

I’ve probably made a bunch more mistakes I can’t think of (oh, ticking off my wife by being on the computer all the time!). But I’m not beating myself up over these. Mistakes are important in any venture. I think they are necessary to learn. In fact writing these out and looking at them gives me a better road map of how to improve.

Let me know what you think!
