Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal

January 2, 2008

We’ve all heard how a good breakfast is an important part of good nutrition. Well my breakfast is now saving me money!

I work in Manhattan in NYC, commuting every day from Queens. For about as long as I’ve worked here I’ve gotten breakfast at either the deli across the street or from a coffee cart nearby. A typical breakfast would cost about $3.

For the past year or so I’ve been bringing my daughter to school in the morning. Part of my routine with my daughter, along with brushing her hair and making sure she makes her bed, is to give her breakfast. Recently I’ve been joining her, making breakfast for us both. I’d still get breakfast before I got to work though (second breakfasts anyone?). Then the construction workers came! When I got to the deli there would be a line of construction guys placing huge orders for their co-workers. I was getting to work just in time or a few minutes late. My first reaction was to skip food and just get coffee. After a week of this it dawned on me that we have a coffee machine here at work! Now I’m eating breakfast at home and using the company machine for coffee. This saves me $3/day, or $15/week, or $60/month, or about $700/year!

Ok, I know I’m still paying for breakfast at home. That amount is much smaller than what I’m paying at the deli. What is really important is that I’ve come across a way to fill in a little more into my budget. Start adding up all of the little amounts you can save and you’ll find that you can save a lot!

Do you have a small expense you were able to eliminate or reduce? Let me know!

It must be nice quality time with your daughter to eat breakfast together.

My mom always made breakfast for us and insisted that we eat it. If I skip breakfast I am miserable for the whole day.

Yeah, it nice. It’s fun letting her choose breakfast then give me input whether she likes it.

I used to never eat breakfast. I didn’t realize it was causing my low energy. Now I need to have at least something every day.

And of course, I’m saving money eating at home!

No kidding – it really is amazing what you can save when you make breakfast AND lunch… Personally, I never eat breakfast (not financial reasons, I just don’t) saving me 5 bucks and then for lunch, I eat out maybe twice a month, but for the most part eat 10 for $10 chili from Albertsons, or something similar in the “under 1.50 realm somewhere… it adds up!

@Hank – Watch out for the fast food! It mat be cheap but it still has a cost! I’ve found that I need breakfast in the morning. I’m not the same without something in me. Occasionally I’ll bring in lunch. My wife on the other hand almost always brings in lunch!
