7 Things You Didn’t Know About Free From Broke
1) I used to play in a rock/metal band. I played bass actually. We were together for a few years and played some live shows but broke up after conflicts between band members. We even recorded a four song demo. Oh, know the movie Spinal Tap? Yeah, things like that happen in real life.
2) I’ve had hair down past my shoulders as well as hair buzz cut. I’ve also been various shades of blond and had black hair for a bit. I guess I have a very “corporate” look now. Ahhh youth….
3) I love music! Can you tell? I was actually a music major (theory) for a couple of years in a demanding program. Prior to being a music major? I attended a business school. The music program was much more challenging than the business classes were (or maybe just more interesting?).
3) I have a black belt in Aikido. Aikido is a Japanese martial art that I have been studying for about ten years. That said, I consider myself just a beginner.
4) In 2007 I ran the NYC marathon. I’ve mentioned this once or twice so some people might know about it. My time wasn’t spectacular but I finished. I plan to enter the lottery to run this year. It was an awesome experience by the way!
5) I love gadgets! Camping gadgets, music gadgets, electronic gadgets…love ‘em! My frugal side fights a hard battle to keep the gadget side at bay. In my youth the frugal side didn’t win so much ![]()
6) I’m a bit of a beer snob. I love me a micro-brew! I don’t want the mass-produced stuff. It’s well worh it for me to spend a little more for beer with taste than to get a good deal on a 12-pack. Mmmm…
7) Ice Cream is my friend and enemy. Ever sit down wth a pint of ice cream as you get ready to watch a movie you rented? I’m usually done with the pint by the time the opening credits are done rolling. Ben, Jerry – you are two of my closest buddies. And I love what comes from the magical land of Haagen Dazs! I kidded with my wife that I should write a book called Marathon Training On A Pint A Day!

Since you were tagged by Good Financial Cents that makes me your grand-tagger.
Black belts make you a beginner? You are hanging with a tough crowd then. And if that wasn’t enough you just HAD to run a marathon too. Way to make the rest of us feel pretty lousy.

@ Technically Shodan (black belt) means something like first step. It’s just a 1st step to mastery. Think of it this way, I’ve been paying bills and handling my finances for well over a decade now but I can hardly call myself a personal finance guru. I’m still learning. As for the marathon, see my ice cream statement. Trust me, the past year has seen many more pints than miles on my frame!
@ Penelope – I loved music theory. You’d be surprised how much math and logic it involves but at the same time you need to be musical. You know, you can always go back to Tang Soo Do or try to study something else? I think my all time favorite is Cherry Garcia but I love a lot of them!
@ Miranda – Yes, the Haagen Dazs bars are quite evil/good! I think every vacation my wife and I have gone on we’ve managed to find either a Ben and Jerry’s or a Haagen Dazs store!
@ Craig – Blue Point is nice! When my company had it’s x-mas party they had that on tap! Some other good ones are Magic Hat #9, Brooklyn Brewery (all good), and Sam Adams Cherry Wheat (like cherry soda but it’s beer!).
Wow, a music theory major! That sounds like so much fun, and I’m not being facetious. I love music theory; in fact, some of my classmates and teachers suggested majoring in music theory but that would’ve involved changing schools and that was too humbuggy.
I lived and breathed Tang Soo Do for 3 years, but quit just before my instruction was going to let me skip a level and test for red. I regret it to this day that I didn’t stay and get my black belt. (Complicated reasons involved in quitting.)
Who doesn’t love Ben & Jerry? My favorite is Chunky Munky. Oh wait, Phish Phood. Ah, I love ‘em all!
Thanks for playing.

Finally! It’s fun to get to know more about you. Ice cream is also my frenemy. Have you tried the ice cream bars from Haagan-Dazs? Dark chocolate around vanilla. Too delicious!

Do you like Blue Point? Every time I got back home to LI I always have to have myself a good pint of Blue Point, I agree, the microbeers are better.
@ffb I do miss the Blue Point being in the DC area now. I like the Brooklyn beers as well, and actually had a Cherry Wheat last night while watching the game. Delic
I will only drink good beer, not that mass-produced crap.
I actually used to work in a microbrewery and gave guided tours so I know the brewing process fairly well.
We had great, all natural beers that were brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Act.
Prost!

@ TStrump – I need to change my job! I’m going to find work at a brewery!!! (Although I think working at the Ben & Jerry’s factory would be cool too).
