We’re Moving

Post image for We’re Moving

It’s been such a hectic week and it isn’t going to get any easier. We finally received a closing date for the sale of our co-op.  It’s going to take place early next week.  This means we should get out of here as soon as possible.  We could stay for a limited time period but it would be easier on all parties if we moved.  There’s already have a new apartment lined up (we’re going to rent for a while before we jump into buying a house) so all we need to do is move.

We had some stuff already packed away but we have plenty more to pack before the move this weekend. It’s amazing how much stuff you realize you have when you start to pack.  We thought we were pretty minimal after we cleared a lot out before we started showing our place to potential buyers.  On top of that we have to start the process of changing our address and transfer things like our phone line, cable, and electric accounts to the new place.

It’s an exciting time! We are actually moving into a larger place and our son will get his own room for the first time.  Still, we’ve been here for years and it will be sad to leave this place we made our home for so long (I’ll personally miss our garden which we won’t have at the new place).

It’s been such a whirlwind! We’re finalizing the closing, calling up movers, packing up stuff, I’m taking care of the kids, did I mention I’ve been going back to school too?, …lots going on at once.  I guess when it rains it pours right?  But it’s all good and once it’s all settled we can get back into a new rhythm in our new place.

I’d love to hear any moving tips that you have!  Every little bit will help.

Wish us luck!

Technically we’ve always been on the island, but no, not out to Nassau or Suffolk yet. Closer to the border though!

Good time to unclutter, get ri of the junk now, don’t keep moving it. I moved all my stuff, and 15 years later, I’m opening boxes, still, and throwing stuff out.

Man, do I hear you! We had no idea how much stuff we had (and still have)! And we got rid of a lot too.

Biggest tip, have lots of help.

Second, try to have it all packed before starting. There always seems to be a flurry at the end and it takes more trips to handle odds and ends that could have been more effieciently handled.

Finally, label the boxes with where they go and what is in them .

We were fortunate to get some family chipping in. We wouldn’t have survived it without them!

We did label all of the boxes as well as number them to keep track. It’s helped enormously!

Not a bad idea! Our movers were great and asked if they weren’t sure where to put something. Still, it could have made things a little smoother if we had some high priority boxes labeled as such.

VERY Important! Empty a cupboard, put all the things you DON’T want packed in there and tape it shut so the movers can’t get into it (I don’t know if you hired movers but they will take anything that isn’t nailed down, including pet dishes with food STILL IN THEM, and throw it in a box!)

I also made the mistake of packing my own purse in a last-minute box and thankfully discovered it before the moving truck went away with all our stuff for a three-day trip across the country! (Or maybe that was the movers again! I really don’t remember!)

Remember to keep the aforementioned purses/wallets, along with cash, a cooler with drinks, snacks, keys, towels /soap(to shower after packing), important papers, in the cupboard until after the packing is done. Have some folding chairs you can collapse into–you’ll need them.

Have friends come over near the end (if they aren’t already helping) to help you get rid of small items that will be left or to pick out whatever small furnishings they might want to take with them. They can also take what’s left of your perishable food and potted plants.

In your last run-through the house, look up! Many things out the line of sight are left behind. And remember to check any secret hiding places you may have left something from years ago.

Great advice! We made sure to keep personal stuff we would need in our car and away from everything else. But you’re right, movers go to work and don’t stop and will take what they can.

For us, when we moved was a great time to de-clutter and get rid of a lot of stuff that we didn’t need. We got rid of old clothes, furniture that was already just being stored, old artwork not hanging on the walls, books, old paperwork we didn’t need, old electronics, cables, wires, etc etc etc. Take the time moving to simplify and get rid of all the tons of things you don’t need any longer. It will make you feel better and more at ease once you do move!

Let me tell you we tried! We could still go over all of our stuff again and check for things we could get rid of or give away. But we did lighten the load a bit.

One tip that I have found helpful is that when you move into your new place make sure to buy some extra rubbermaid large plastic bins from Wal-Mart or somewhere and maybe even some metal shelving for the garage or a closet if you have room and then rather than just throwing the odds and ends into the closet/garage to remain permanently cluttered in your new place just start from scratch to organize your stuff on the new shelving and in the plastic bins. (Wow, that was a really long run on sentence :) )

We considered the plastic bins but we figured it would create more clutter. Cardboard boxes would give us a better incentive to unpack. If we had a full garage though I think we would have done as you described.
