There’s a new cookbook that’s come out that sounds like it’s great for families and the frugal-minded. It’s called The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook. The book is written by Erin Chase, author of the popular site 5DollarDinners.com.
The premise of the book is that every recipe will feed a family of four and will cost no more than $5. Part of the way this is accomplished is through the use of coupons and finding the best deals when shopping. Sounds like this is right up our block, huh?
I’d love to give you a in-depth review but the book just came out and I don’t have a copy yet (though the publisher is sending me one). To read more about the book check what the author’s site has to say: 5DollarDinners.com/Cookbook.
Oh Yeah, The Giveaway!
The publisher was also kind enough to supply a copy of The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook to one lucky reader (US & Canada only).
To enter the giveaway leave me a comment below with your favorite frugal meal (only one comment per person). You have until Sunday, December 27th 2009, 11:59pm EST. Make sure you leave a valid email address. I’ll pick one comment at random as the winner. If I don’t hear from you within 48 hours I’ll pick a different winner. The publisher is responsible for shipping out the book.
Editor’s Note: This contest is now closed.
Start off the new year well with a frugal cookbook to feed your family with (well, don’t feed them the book, you know, use the recipes).
Check out Amazon if you’d like to purchase a copy.

Sounds like an interesting book. We’ve had dinner for 4 for a budget of around $5 numerous times. When you consider some food items end up being 2 meals, this isn’t too hard.
If you come from the position of going out for dinner every day, then this would be a HUGE difference in your budget.
Would love to see what kind of meals the book is sharing.

frugal for me is getting a free meal from my work. Grocery store frugal is mac and cheese
Hi! My best $5.00 meal is my Chicken Crockpot Surprise. Put in 2 frozen chix breats, one can of cream of chicken soup, can of beans, jar of salsa, and top off with a can of corn. YUM! I know it sounds odd but it is so good, cheap and just about any can of soup, beans or veggies will work. A real winner when you need a warm mean with good stuff in it! To make it fancy, you can steam some brown rice! Enjoy!
I just realized I didn’t include the Meal in my previous comment. My fav would be home made Pizza! Prepare bread dough. Let it rise. Grab a jar of Pasta sauce and add it to dough, then add cheese. The family loves it and it tastes better than many pizzarias

Our favorite, most frugal meal is black-eyed peas. We love these cooked and served over white rice. Both items are super cheap. We top with chopped red and green peppers – even some jalapeno if we have it.
I’m a college student, and I love things like this. One of my favorite frugal recipes is Mexican Rice Casserole.
Cook Rice.
Then, cook ground beef with bell peppers, cumin, chili powder, and ginger. Add rice and black beans. put in 9×13 and layer with sliced tomatoes and cheddar cheese. Cook until cheese is bubbly.
I just saw this book at Borders and flipped through it- would love to give some of the meals a try! My favorite frugal meal is the classic grilled cheese, tomato bisque, and a side of carrot sticks
My current favorite frugal meal is Taco Soup with a side of Club crackers.

My fave frugal meal is fried eggs and french toast…always a hit and oh so cheap!
Chili is the favorite cheap meal around here (not mine) but DH has to have a meat.
Also over on Erin’s blog she had a recipe for coconut rice & beans made with coconut milk that my kids LOVE!!! just sweet enough that they eat all the beans.
I would love a copy of the book, following her blog (&another) I have expanded my “cheap” cooking styles so much & have branched out with different ingredients
Spaghetti and meatballs is the favorite frugal meal around here. Everyone loves it. Put in some garlic bread and it is a feast.
I’ve actually tried one of her recipes and it was excellent, even the little ones enjoyed!
Ham & beans with cornbread! Which also feeds my family of 4 for 2 meals. This is what we are having for dinner tonight!
I recently downloaded a free eBook from the $5 dinner mom. There were some pretty delicious looking recipes in it.
My favorite frugal meal is sausage and potatoes from the Depression Era Cook. It’s called the poor man’s meal which is originally made with hot dogs, but I’m not sure I can get into that.

I’m a college student that lives alone, and my favorite frugal meal is spaghetti and sauce. I can get a box of the pasta from Safeway for about $0.99, and a jar of sauce (that I can stick back in the fridge) for less than $2. From that, I’ll get at least four portions!
My favorite frugal meal is lentils with carrots, onions, and just a little ham served over rice. Cheap, delicious, and there’s always tons of leftovers to take for lunches!
My favorite meal for $5 (actually less) would be breakfast burritos.
Eggs (1 Doz.) – $1.20
Chorizo – $1.50
Tortillas – $2.00
Knowing that it’s enough to make about 3 meals with – priceless.
