Apple announced the new, third generation of the iPad this week to much fanfare.
Oddly enough Apple isn’t calling it the iPad 3… just “the new iPad”.
It’s just iPad?
That goes against Apple’s naming convention. That plus the debut of a color splashed version of the Apple logo have some tech journalists wondering if Apple is going to change things up again on the logo side.
iPads are expensive devices. Well built and entertaining, but other than a sharper display is there that much difference between the original iPad, the iPad 2, and now the iPad 3?
Not significantly. Will you be buying one?
Before you run off to spend $500 on the new device, make sure your finances are in good shape. These great reads can help you on that end:

The latest iPad is a small improvement over the 2, I agree. There will always be the sale to first time owner, and then the upgraders. I never bought the 2 so for me it’s an addition of camera, although 5MP is still less than the iPhone, and the high resolution screen.
The tipping point will be whether it uses the same SIM card. I have the unlimited service ATT offered then withdrew. $30. That same cost is now for 3GB which is easy to burn through when streaming video. (If same SIM card, I’ll just move it over, if it’s different, I don’t know if ATT will allow a service transfer.
I don’t think I will be a customer for the iPad. I enjoy my down time away from the computer.
Thanks for the links, I really appreciate it.
Have the first iPad already, and getting the new iPad. If I had the iPad 2 I wouldn’t upgrade.
Thanks for the mention.
I won’t be getting the latest iPad because I don’t think it’s much of an improvement from the iPad 2, which I currently have. I doubt I’ll be upgrading again for many years to come.
Thanks for featuring our article! Agreed on the odd iPad naming convention. A good that resulted from this is that the iPad 2 came down in price, thus making it more affordable for those who dont own any iPads.
It makes sense that Apple is calling the iPad 3 “the new iPad.” In fact, I’m surprised that Mr. Jobs didn’t call the iPad 2 the same thing. Apple stands for simplicity, they are always looking to reduce clutter, complexity, and keep things as pure as possible. I think there are a lot of lessons we can learn here for our own businesses. Wouldn’t you agree?
I have the iPad 2 (courtesy of Sustainable Personal Finance and Praire Eco-Thrifter) and I love it. No need to upgrade as it meets my needs just fine!
