Best of Money Carnival #106

by

Welcome to the 106th edition of the Best of Money Carnival! I’m your host, Glen Craig, and it is my pleasure to be presenting you with the ten best personal finance articles this week.  It wasn’t a pleasure putting the carnival together though.  The articles were all great, but having to choose who made the cut was torture!  You would think with this being the third time I’m hosting that it would get easier?

For those unfamiliar with the Best of Money Carnival,  every week sites submit their best article to be considered for the carnival.  Only the ten best are picked (most other carnivals allow any article that’s well-written and fits the carnival).  So making the Best of Money Carnival is something special.

If you are new to Free From Broke (shame on you!) feel free to stay a while and check out some of my other articles.  Also make sure to subscribe to my RSS feed and my email newsletter to stay on top of our latest articles.  You can also follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

And now to this week’s Best of Money articles!

10. retirebyforty presents Should We Refinance The Rental Home?

Retirebyforty wonders if they should refinance.  What I found interesting was the comments on this article.  Seems there is no right answer but there are some great opinions to think about.

9. Pinyo presents How to Review and Update Your Homeowners Insurance.

Unfortunately homeowner’s insurance isn’t “set it and forget it.”  From time to time you still need to review your policy to make sure it’s up to date and you have the coverage you need.

8. Tom Drake presents 13 Reasons Your Rental Suite Is Still Empty.

A lot of the advice here seems to be common sense, but it’s not.  If you can’t figure out why your rental property is vacant then you need to read this!

7. Miss T. presents How to Buy an Eco-Friendly Home If You Can’t Afford to Build One.

More and more people are looking for ways to be more ecologically-minded.  If you are looking to buy a home, see what to look for to find a more eco-friendly home.  There’s some good advice here that I wouldn’t have thought about and can save you money (and homes will eat up money!).

6. Philip presents Everyone Should Know How to Balance a Checkbook.

Balancing a checkbook is becoming something of a dinosaur practice.  With ATM’s and online banking, I’d say most people don’t know where to start, even if they wanted to balance their checkbook.  Find out how and why it’s a good practice.

5. Jason Price presents How Much Salary Should a Stay at Home Mom Earn?

As a stay-at-home-dad I can definitely relate.  Let me tell you, stay-at-home-moms don’t get the credit they deserve!  I do a passable job taking care of the kids but my wife takes it to eleven.

4. My Personal Finance Journey presents Valuation-Informed Indexing vs. Passive Investing – Which is Better?

I’m going to be honest here, I understand the concept of value-informed investing but I don’t necessarily understand all of the details.  This article does a great job of comparing the returns from a VII portfolio and compares them to a passive investing portfolio.

3. Mike Piper presents It’s All One Portfolio.

A great look at asset allocation amongst ALL of your portfolios.  Probably more often than not, we duplicate our allocations in each of our portfolios [sheepishly guilty] when it may be better to look at the bigger picture.

2. Joe Morgan presents Notice of Mortgage Protection Insurance, a Scam.

We know we need certain types of insurance.  So getting an official-looking envelope related to your home would make you think this is another insurance you need, correct?  Meh, not so much.

And the top article for the week, the numero uno, the big cheese, the post-est with the most-est…

1. Money Cone presents If You Bank Online, You Need To Do This, Pronto!

Your bank account is so much safer than a credit card, right?  Right?!? See why your debit card may have more liability than your credit card as well as some great tips to make using your your bank account online safer.

And that’s this week’s Best of Money Carnival!

I hope you enjoyed.  Let me know your favorite article in the comments.  Check out next week’s carnival hosted at Small Biz Big Dreams.
