Today, Oct 15th, is Blog Action Day and this year’s focus is Water.  Blog Action Day tries to create awareness for an important issue to help the world every year.

Did you know this about Water (from the Blog Action Day site)?

  • About 884 million people lack access to safe drinking water,
  • 2.6 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation,
  • 90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water are children under five,
  • 40% of America’s rivers and 48% of U.S. lakes are too polluted for fishing or swimming,
  • Lack of water leads to poverty as (mostly) women and children spend so much time collecting water there is no time for school or work.

I think of how we take for granted our access to clean water.  What is just flipping up a faucet in my kitchen takes miles of walking with a water jug on someone’s back.  Let’s see if we can all take a little time out and see what we can do to help.

Thinking about not having clean water to drink kind of puts things into perspective doesn’t it?

I bet there are people all over the world who’d love their biggest problem to be a little credit card debt or trying to figure out how to invest in their 401k.

Thanks for the mention., and this definitely does put things in perspective. No matter how rich or poor we are, there is always something to complain about, but lack of access to clean water is much more significant than a problem with the alternator! This is really one of the most basic things to have.

It really is a basic need Kevin. I certainly wince when I have to pay for water but the fact that I have it at my disposal puts me at an advantage greater than many people in this world. It’s great that there are organizations out there to help people get water.

I went to a tweetup a while back for charity:water, it was a cool way to raise money for the cause. You paid like $10 for a ticket and the money went to the charity. And thanks for the mention!
