Professional Sports Lockouts and Links

by

While unemployment continues to stand frustratingly above 9%, millionaire professional athletes and the billionaire team owners can’t seem to get along. Despite the fact that billions of dollars stand to be lost on both sides, the NFL is currently in lockout.  The NBA draft just occurred in June, but those new players can’t integrate with their teams due to an impending lockout.  One has to wonder if these leagues miss their next seasons, will they suffer the same consequences as Major League Baseball after the 1994-1995 strike? (Attendance dropped 20% in the following season and the fans that did show up consistently booed.) [Editor: The baseball strike did usher in the age of steroids where 40 HR seasons became common. That was good, right?]

While you ponder the problems of millionaires, why not catch up on some reading so you can become one of them without picking up a football?

It’s a shame that the players and owners can’t come to a reasonable solution. I think that if any games are canceled, the league will lose a lot of fans and respect given the economic situation in the country. A lot of ill will is likely to result.

I agree. Though I think the owners should still have a season and use whomever they can find to play. In fact, they should only use people that haven’t played in any professional way or even in college. The owners could make a killing. Throw in a reality series were average guys try out for these teams, it could be fun. Honestly, I’m sick of ‘roided out players that don’t seem human anymore.
