The Frugality of Our Feet

by

So it’s Monday afternoon. We went out for a quick drive to do some errands. Afterwards we would be free. It was a holiday weekend for us so we were able to finish the majority of our errands earlier in the weekend. We could have gone back home but we were getting a bit of cabin fever. So what to do?

We went for a walk! There’s a nice trail we know of that goes by a local bridge (Throg’s Neck) along the water. We parked in the lot, put the little guy in his stroller and my wife, daughter, and I went walking. It was a beautiful day too (it’s still very much winter here in NYC).

Let’s look at a few benefits of our walk:

  • It didn’t cost us anything! Free is a wonderful thing isn’t it?
  • It was exercise. We tried to keep up a decent pace. This allowed all of us to get some exercise in for the day. Did I mention it was free?
  • We didn’t sit around watching TV. Is TV evil? I wouldn’t go that far but it does suck the productivity out of us.
  • It felt good. Ever feel really good watching TV for a half hour? It’s kinda rare. We felt good after our walk. It was nice to get out and do something, especially as a family.
  • It’s a good habit for our daughter. She’s eight and it never hurts to have her out moving around. By all of us going it shows her this is an easy and fun bit of exercise we can all do.
We’re going to try to plan more family walks when we can. It’s tough sometimes with all of our responsibilities but the benefits are great! And did I mention it was free?

I agree! Walking can be so great! We try to do a family walking outing or we take the horses (yes we are THAT rural!) and go down a trail or two. It’s free, it’s fresh air and teaches the kids that TV is far from the answer to “I’m bored”

Take Care

@ LJ – Wow. Horses. That sounds awesome! And yeah, TV is not the answer to I’m bored; it’s usually the cause.

@ Dawn – Isn’t that one of the best benefits – time with the family? I think so. Thanks for the warm wishes.

What a great post! You gotta love free exercise. I can’t wait for the weather to warm up so I can get out more.

@ Kacie – I hear you! Can’t wait to use our backpack for our little guy! We have one of those Kelty ones that we used last summer but now he’s one and might enjoy it more.
