In addition to credit cards that offer hotel rewards, there are a number of hotel chains that offer their own reward programs.
One of them that offers the flexibility to earn either hotel points or air mile points is Marriott Rewards.
Marriott Rewards are accrued at 10 points per dollar spent (or 2 air mile points per dollar) at Marriott and JW Marriott Hotels and Resorts, Renaissance Hotels and Resorts, Edition, Autograph Collection, The Ritz-Carlton, and Marriott Vacation Club International. Other hotels that earn 5 points per dollar spent or 1 air mile point include Residence Inn, and TownePlace Suites, among others. Qualifying hotels are found in 68 countries.
Signing up for Marriott Rewards is quite simple; you are required to give basic information such as your name, address, and e-mail address. When you sign up, you can choose if you would like to accrue your points to earn free hotel stays or as air mile rewards.
Levels of Membership
If you frequently travel, you could qualify for one of the Elite membership levels, Platinum, Gold and Silver.
–Platinum membership is earned after you have spent 75 nights at qualifying hotels within one calendar year. For each dollar spent, you earn 50% bonus points, guaranteed room type, free local phone and fax, in addition to other perks.
–Gold membership is earned after 50 nights spent at qualifying hotels within one calendar year. For each dollar spent, you earn 25% bonus points, guaranteed room type, free local phone and fax, in addition to other perks.
–Silver membership is earned after 10 nights spent at qualifying hotels within one calendar year. For each dollar spent, you earn 20% bonus points, priority late checkout, and weekend discount, in addition to other perks.
Additional Ways to Earn Points
In addition to hotel stays, you can earn points a variety of other ways, including the following:
-Use one of the three available Marriott Rewards Credit Cards (Marriott Rewards Credit Card from Chase, Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase, Marriott Rewards Business Card).
As you can see, using their credit card is an easy way to rack up points in their program.
-Book a car rental through Hertz or Sixt using a code for your Marriott Rewards account and earn 500 points.
-Shop at FTD.com or SkyMall and earn 10 points for every dollar spent. You can also earn points at ShopMyWay Mall though the rewards for this site vary depending on the vendor you purchase from.
-Take a cruise with CruisesOnly and earn up to 20,000 points.
-Earn from 3,000 to 7,500 points for signing up with companies such as WireFly, LifeLock, and Chase.
Ways to Redeem Points
–Free night stay. Hotels are ranked 1 through 8. Category 1 hotels only require 7,500 points for a free night while category 8 hotels require 40,000 points.
–Airline miles. Marriott Rewards partners with many airlines around the world. The airline you choose will determine how your hotel rewards convert to air miles.
–Car, rail and cruise. The points required vary, but, for example, you can rent a full size car for 3 days for 25,000 points or get a $250 Cruise certificate for 70,000 points. Rail service is through the Orient Express; the lowest reward is 85,000 points for a round trip excursion with a 5 course meal.
If your account is inactive for 24 months, it may be automatically closed and all earned points will be forfeited.
If you travel often and tend to stay at Marriott facilities, it makes sense to enroll in their hotel rewards program and make your spending go a little further.
